According to the Vietnam Environment Administration (VEA), the Biodiversity Conservation Plan for the period 2021 – 2030, with a vision to 2050, will be formulated throughout Viet Nam, including land, sea and islands. 6 objects are included in the Plan, including: Nature Reserve; Biodiversity corridor; Biodiversity conservation facilities; High biodiversity area; Important ecological landscape; and Important wetlands.

The principles when formulating the Plan have been clearly defined, including: Harmonizing the combination between conservation and rational use of natural resources, focusing on maintenance and development of ecosystem services to minimize level of degradation, exhaustion of natural resources, adapting to climate change and serving sustainable development;Applying an ecosystem approach in developing a Plan for biodiversity conservation; Strengthen biodiversity conservation outside the nature conservation areas; Mobilizing all resources of the community into biodiversity conservation; Ensure principles of equitable and harmonious sharing of interests of stakeholders.

The planning of the new phase is agreed upon according to the criteria of the Law on Biodiversity on the basis of maximizing the inheritance of achievements and maintaining the stability of the existing biodiversity conservation planning system.

Accordingly, the Master Plan for biodiversity conservation in the 2021 – 2030 period to ensure important natural ecosystems, endangered precious and rare species and genetic resources are preserved and sustainably developed; maintain and develop an ecosystem service to adapt to climate change to promote sustainable development of the country. The plan also defines the vision to 2050 for Vietnam’s biodiversity.

Remarkably, the next 10-year biodiversity conservation plan is formulated concurrently with two other specialized master plans, namely the national environmental protection planning and the environmental monitoring system planning.
